On 9 October 2023, Luca Verzichelli (University of Siena) took part in a conference at the University of Carthage in Tunisia, where he presented reflections on the relationship between the REDIRECT project and ongoing political developments in the Mediterranean region.
The presentation highlighted how the conceptual lens of representative disconnect can be applied beyond European democracies to better understand evolving patterns of political representation, participation, and legitimacy across Mediterranean countries. In doing so, it underscored the project’s comparative potential and its relevance for analysing diverse institutional and societal contexts.
By engaging with regional debates, the session helped position REDIRECT as part of a broader academic conversation about democratic transformation and governance challenges on both shores of the Mediterranean. It also contributed to building intellectual bridges between European and North African research communities.
