On 25 March 2024, Alice Moseley (University of Exeter) presented REDIRECT research at the PSA Conference held at the University of Strathclyde, UK. The presentation, co-authored with Lise Herman and Emilie Frenkiel, focused on the role of citizens’ assemblies in educational environments and how they can foster deeper democratic engagement.
The paper explored how these deliberative formats, typically used to engage citizens in policy design, can also serve as tools for teaching democratic principles and participatory skills. The contribution is part of REDIRECT’s Work Package 7, which investigates democratic innovations through both analytical and applied lenses.
By drawing on experiences of using citizens’ assemblies in classroom and outreach settings, the presentation illustrated how young people and students can be directly involved in democratic practice. It also offered a reflection on how institutional design and pedagogy can intersect to promote more responsive and inclusive forms of political representation.
