A REDIRECT researcher, John Erik Fossum, chaired a thematic session on “The Future of Representative Democracy” at the European Consortium for Political Research General Conference 2024 in Dublin. The conference is one of the largest international gatherings of political scientists and provides a key forum for presenting and debating new research on contemporary political developments.
The session brought together scholars examining questions of institutional design, democratic reform and the evolving functioning of representative institutions. Presentations and discussions focused on how democratic systems can respond to emerging political challenges, including changing patterns of citizen engagement, evolving expectations toward political representatives and the pressures facing traditional mechanisms of political intermediation.
