Małgorzata Fijal and Elodie Thevenin presented research on vertical disconnect and the weakening of parliaments at the Italian Political Science Association (SISP) Congress 2024 in Trieste, Italy. The congress brought together scholars from across Italy and beyond to discuss current developments in political representation, institutions and democratic governance.
The presentation focused on how institutional developments and political dynamics may generate forms of vertical disconnect between citizens and representative institutions. In particular, it examined how shifts in the balance between executive and legislative powers, as well as evolving patterns of political accountability, can affect the capacity of parliaments to effectively represent and respond to citizens’ preferences.
The conference provided an important venue for discussing these findings with scholars working on democratic representation and parliamentary politics. The exchange of ideas and feedback contributed to the ongoing development of REDIRECT’s research on the institutional dimensions of the representative disconnect.
