Zsófia Papp presented a paper on “Emergency Politics and Citizens’ Evaluation of Democracy” at the Italian Political Science Association (SISP) Congress 2024 held in Trieste, Italy. The congress brought together scholars working on political institutions, representation and democratic governance.

The presentation examined how emergency politics can shape citizens’ evaluations of representative democracy, focusing on how crisis governance influences perceptions of democratic responsiveness and legitimacy. The study contributes to REDIRECT’s broader research on the transformation of representative relationships and the challenges facing democratic institutions in periods of political stress and heightened executive action.

The conference provided an opportunity to discuss these findings with scholars working on democratic representation, institutional change and political behaviour, fostering exchange on how crises affect citizens’ expectations toward representative institutions.
