At the ECPR General Conference 2025, hosted by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Sergio Martini, Paolo Marzi, and Luca Verzichelli (University of Siena) presented their paper:

“Citizens’ Preferences for Representation Styles: An Empirical Investigation of the Mandate–Independence Controversy in Eight European Countries” (retitled).

  • How do citizens want to be represented?

  • What individual-level factors explain variation in these preferences?

Drawing on REDIRECT comparative survey data (2025), the study analyses how factors such as ideological outlook, cognitive mobilisation, electoral status, and satisfaction with democracy shape citizens’ positioning along the trustee–delegate continuum.
