The Crisis of Representative Democracy: Disconnection and Counter-Strategies

As part of the second edition of Agorà Unitus – No Kings Week: Fractures of Democracy, Geographies of Conflict — Luca Verzichelli (University of Siena) delivered a seminar titled The Crisis of Representative Democracy: Dimensions of “Disconnection” and Counter-Strategies at Università degli Studi della Tuscia.

The seminar addressed some of the core challenges facing contemporary representative democracies, focusing on the growing processes of political disconnection between citizens and elites, as well as possible institutional and political counter-strategies to rebuild democratic representation and public trust.

By reflecting on the tensions affecting representative democracy today, the event offered an important opportunity to discuss how democratic systems can respond to distrust, distance, and weakening links between citizens and political institutions.
