A REDIRECT research paper by Magdalena Góra was presented at the 13th Biennial Conference of the ECPR Standing Group on the European Union (SGEU), hosted by the University of Catania, Italy. The conference provided a forum for scholars to discuss new research on European politics, democratic representation and the evolving challenges faced by representative democracies.
The presentation, titled “Representing the Future? Assessing the Representation of the Youth by Young MPs”, examined how young Members of Parliament contribute to the representation of younger generations and future-oriented political concerns. The paper addressed an important question for contemporary democracies: whether the presence of young representatives translates into stronger representation of youth interests, experiences and expectations.
The study contributed to REDIRECT’s broader research on political representation, generational change and democratic responsiveness. By focusing on young MPs and the representation of youth, the paper shed light on how age, political experience and representative claims shape the relationship between elected officials and younger citizens.
