REDIRECT continued its participation at the ECPR General Conference in Kraków with a panel dedicated to political parties and the challenges facing representative democracy in Europe.
The panel brought together Luca Verzichelli, John Erik Fossum and Thomas Poguntke for a discussion on the role of political parties in contemporary European democracies and the pressures affecting systems of political representation.
The discussion provided an opportunity to reflect on how parties are responding to changing political environments, evolving citizen expectations and broader transformations in democratic representation across Europe. These questions are closely connected to REDIRECT’s research on representation, democratic institutions and the changing relationship between citizens and political elites.
The panel also offered an important space for exchange with scholars attending the European Consortium for Political Research General Conference and for discussing different perspectives on the current and future role of political parties in European democracy.
Many thanks to Luca Verzichelli, John Erik Fossum and Thomas Poguntke for their contributions, and to everyone who joined the discussion.
