A new series of short video interviews, Conversations on Democratic Representation, is now available on the REDIRECT website. Bringing together researchers from across and beyond the project, the series explores the challenges facing representative democracy in Europe and possible paths towards democratic reconnection.
The conversations address a central concern of REDIRECT: the distance that can develop between citizens and the institutions and actors meant to represent them. Contributors examine how this disconnect is experienced, how it shapes democratic attitudes and relationships, and what might help strengthen recognition, responsiveness and accountability.
Drawing on surveys, interviews, focus groups and other project research, the videos connect academic debates with the experiences of citizens and political representatives. They explore what people expect from representation, how political actors understand their responsibilities, and how social and institutional contexts shape the relationships between representatives and represented.
Alongside examining the sources of democratic dissatisfaction, the series considers possibilities for strengthening these relationships. The conversations reflect on the contribution of dialogue, participation and democratic innovation, while considering the conditions under which these practices can influence political decisions and support more inclusive and responsive representation.
Presented in an accessible conversational format, the series shares ongoing REDIRECT research with audiences beyond academia. It offers an opportunity to engage with emerging findings and reflect on their implications for contemporary democracy, contributing to the project’s broader commitment to public discussion of representative disconnect and strategies for addressing it.
