On 14 September 2023, Zsófia Papp (Centre for Social Sciences – HUN-REN) presented a paper at the SISP Conference 2023 in Genoa, Italy, entitled “Question-order effect in the study of satisfaction with democracy. Lessons from three split-ballot experiments.”
Co-authored with Pál Susánszky and Andrea Szabó, the paper explored how the sequencing of survey questions can influence respondents’ answers when evaluating democratic performance. Based on three original split-ballot experiments, the authors demonstrated how even subtle changes in question order may shape citizens’ reported levels of satisfaction with democracy – with important implications for the reliability of comparative survey research.
The presentation contributed to REDIRECT’s broader research agenda by shedding light on the methodological dimensions of measuring political attitudes. It also provided an opportunity to disseminate insights from the project’s empirical work and to engage with fellow scholars working on survey design, public opinion, and democratic legitimacy.
