Exploring Democratic Futures: Insights from the REDIRECT Scenario-Building Event in Brussels

This report synthesizes the outcomes of a scenario-building exercise held on 16 May 2025 at Muntpunt in Brussels as part of the REDIRECT project. Bringing together diverse stakeholders, the event fostered collaborative reflection on the future of representative democracy in Europe. Participants worked within three distinct scenario groups – DISCONNECT, RECONNECT, and REDIRECT – to envision plausible democratic trajectories, identify underlying drivers, and explore potential societal and institutional implications. Rather than seeking consensus, the exercise aimed to surface tensions, innovative ideas, and problem-solving perspectives that can inform public debate, institutional learning, and democratic experimentation. The report presents the key insights emerging from each scenario discussion.
