Federico Russo of the University of Salento and REDIRECT took part in the UNICOST conference “The Constitution: Past, Present and Future” in Mesagne, near Brindisi.
His presentation, “Representative and Direct Democracy in the Current Geopolitical Context,” explored the relationship between two ways citizens can shape political decisions: through elected representatives and through more direct forms of participation. The topic raised questions about how democratic institutions can respond to citizens’ expectations in a changing geopolitical context.
These questions are central to REDIRECT. The project studies the distance between citizens and their representatives and considers how that relationship might be strengthened. Looking at representative and direct democracy together provides an opportunity to reflect on how people make their voices heard and how institutions respond.
The conference brought these themes into a broader discussion about the Constitution across past, present and future. Russo’s contribution connected REDIRECT’s research on democratic representation with current debates about participation and the role of political institutions.
