At the ECPR General Conference 2025, hosted by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Lise Herman, Alice Monsley, and Mathieu Prevelato (University of Siena) presented their paper:

“To what extent are DMPs politicised, how and by whom? A comparative analysis of the media coverage of Climate Assemblies in France and the UK” (retitled).

🔎 About the Study:

This research examines the politicisation of deliberative mini-publics (DMPs) through a comparative content analysis of 6,131 media claims from major newspapers (2019–2022). The analysis considers salience, actors, positions, and justifications shaping public discourse.

📌 Key Findings:

  • Higher politicisation in France → greater coverage, polarization, and diversity of arguments, though not necessarily more variety in claimant types

  • Positive claims more likely in left-leaning outlets, voiced by government elites, and during deliberation phases

  • Politicisation plays an ambivalent role: it enhances visibility and legitimacy but can also sharpen divides
